GLIDING

Air Experience Gliding (AEG)

Gliding is yet another opportunity for cadets to develop their flying skills. Gliding is similar to powered flight except that a glider does not use an engine but thermals, pockets of rising air, to keep it in the air. The two most common types of Glider are the Viking and the Vigilant.

These are flown from VGS (Volunteer Gliding Schools) throughout the UK; the Squadron flies the Vigilant (motor launched) glider from No.634 VGS located at MoD St Athan.

Cadets throughout our Wing also have the opportunity to fly the Viking (winch launched) glider from No.625 VGS located at Hullvington.

Gliding Induction Course (GIC)

Whilst a cadet within the Air Training Corps you will have the opportunity to participate in the GIC, this has been designed to give you a taste for Gliding and consists of three different levels of instruction. During your flight you will be shown various aspects of aerodynamics that as a cadet you will have been taught in the classroom before being taught the “effects of controls” in the air.

During your flight you will have the opportunity to take control and practice what you have learned. On your first visit you will be taught the GIC 1 and your subsequent visits you will progress to GIC 2 and 3.

Once you have completed each GIC you will be awarded a GIC certificate from the VGS.

During your flight experience in the Glider you will be shown and have the opportunity to practice: -

1.       How the pitch is changed

2.       How the rudder affects the yaw plane

3.       How to change the rolling plane

4.       What happens when the glider stalls (GIC 3)

Each GIC will take:

Vigilant

                    GIC 1 – 20 minutes
                    GIC 2 – 25 minutes
                    GIC 3 – 30 minutes

Viking

                     GIC 1 – 3 launches
                     GIC 2 – 4 launches
                     GIC 3 – 5 launches

To participate in any air experience Cadets must:

1.       Be at least 13 years and 3 months of age

2.       Have parent's consent to fly which must be sign on your entry 3822A and in the cadets record of service book 3822

3.       You must have a high level of motivation

4.       Have no temporary or permanent medical condition that would make flying unsafe for you as a cadet or pilot.

Gliding Scholarship (GS)

Gliding Scholarship courses are an opportunity for cadets to undergo further training and achieve Gliding Scholarship Wings. A course consists of up to 40 launches in a Viking or 8 hours in a Vigilant to achieve GS wings. Cadets who show the necessary aptitude, could be invited to progress to 'solo' standard and hopefully achieve the GS Solo Wings.

If a Cadet wants to participate in a Gliding Scholarship, all they need do is speak to the Officer Commanding or Squadron Adjutant and as long as the Cadet has meet the necessary criteria during their Cadet career, we will nominate them to our Wing Gliding Liaison Officer.

Ideally Cadets should have completed a GIC 1, 2 or 3, but it is not mandatory. However Cadets must be 16 years of age when they start the course and will need a medical form (RAF Form 6424), this form must be completed by your G.P.

Courses are available in two formats, either over successive weekends until Cadets have completed the course or a continuous week-long course.

Cadets must have the commitment to attend a GS course, as it can be difficult to predict the exact time it will take to complete as it depends on their own progress and the weather.

Successful completion of the course will entitle Cadets to wear the Blue GS wings. For cadets showing the required aptitude, there may be the opportunity to progress further and possibly reach the solo standard. Should Cadets manage this and successfully complete a solo circuit they will be entitled to wear the Silver GS wings.
