The Air Training Corps is the largest participant of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, and cadets in Aberdare are able to participate in all three aspects of the award; Bronze, Silver and Gold.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities. It is designed to support the personal development of Cadets regardless of gender, religion, background or ability. The award offers an individual challenge and encourages Cadets to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities.

Cadets who participate in the award, must fulfil the requirements of the four sections:

1)       Service

2)       Expeditions

3)       Skills

4)       Physical Recreation

The Gold Award requires cadets to undertake a fifth: A Residential Project.

Cadets within the squadron have the opportunity to participate in the various sections a number of ways. They can: -

  • either participate in an event being run within the Squadron,

  • at other Squadrons within No 1 Welsh Wing

  • or one being run by The No 1 Welsh Wing Adventure Training Team
