CADET CLASSIFICATION

Cadets on the squadron undertake instruction in aviation related subjects; this is an important part of the curriculum on the squadron. As cadets on the squadron progress through the classifications, they will receive a higher level of responsibility and will have more options available to them not only within the squadron but possibly at wing level. Every cadet has a classification making it separate from rank.

Junior Cadet

When you first join the Squadron you will become a junior cadet. This period normally last for one month, at the end of this period you are issued uniform.

Second Class Cadet

Once a cadet has received their uniform, we invite the Squadron Padre to conduct an enrolment ceremony, where cadets become a Second Class cadet. There is no badge for this classification, but cadets are able to begin their training for their first class badge.

First Class Cadet

To become a first class cadet within the squadron, cadets must participate in a training program which includes undertaking a basic drill test. Cadets are required to undertake simple tests where their first class badge and certificate will be issued once complete.

The training program includes:

The RAF           Initial Expedition            Airmanship I             The ATC           The Rifle            Communications

First Aid           Map Reading                 History of Flight

The badge depicts a four pointed star which is worn on your brassard, once issued with a first class badge you will be eligible to go Flying, Gliding, Shooting, UK Camps, Sports etc.

Leading Cadet

During March and November each year cadets undertake their leading cadet classification test. Once a cadet has passed this classification they are then eligible to attend overseas camps.

The training program includes:

Basic Navigation            Principles of Flight         Airmanship II

The badge depicts a propeller and is worn on the brassard (this badge replaces the first class badge on the brassard).

Senior Cadet

As with leading cadets during the months of March and November each year, cadets undertake their senior cadet classification test.

The training program includes:

Propulsion         Airframes

The badge depicts a propeller over a four pointed star and is worn on the brassard

(this replaces the leading cadet badge on the brassard).

Staff Cadet

The staff cadet examination is conducted in two parts, cadets on the squadron are required to undertake a test in two subjects not covered in the senior cadet classification, on 254 these are:

Operational Flying          Satellite Communications

The second test is to undertake an oral examination which is undertaken by a member of Wing Staff. This examination requires cadets to demonstrate understanding of the Air Cadet Organisation and ability to give classes, thus passing their knowledge onto other cadets within the Squadron.

Once completed, staff cadets wear a yellow lanyard over the left shoulder of their uniform, with all previous badges removed from the brassard. Cadets who reach this classification are given other responsibilities within the squadron to assist in its running.
